In its decision of 19 July 1968 in W, X, Y and Z v. the United Kingdom (nos. 3435/67, 3436/67, 3437/67 and 3438/67, Yearbook 11, p. 594), the European Commission of Human Rights held that Article 4 § 3 (b) applied not only to compulsory military service but to all military service, even when entered into voluntarily by regular members of the armed forces.
