The Supreme Court considered the life sentence at issue in Kafkaris v. Cyprus ([GC], no. 21906/04, ECHR 2008) to be similar to that at issue in the present case.The second applicant notes that the Court accepted in Kafkaris v. Cyprus ([GC], no. 21906/04, ECHR 2008) that a punitive but reducible life sentence could be compatible with Article 3 of the Convention.
