The notion of personal autonomy is an important principle underlying the interpretation of the guarantees provided for by Article 8. Under this principle protection is given to the personal sphere of each individual, including the right to establish details of their identity as individual human beings (see Burghartz v. Switzerland, 22 February 1994, § 24, Series A no. 280-B; Christine Goodwin v. the United Kingdom [GC], no. 28957/95, § 90, ECHR 2002-VI).
